Who should use compression socks and hosiery?
About 90 % of venous problems in the legs are the result of venous insufficiency: it is a condition in which blood pools in vein rather than being efficiently pumped back to the heart, which can lead to varicose veins, phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, blood clots and changes in the skin, including leg ulcers, and compression socks and hosiery can be used for all such vein diseases of the leg.
You should use compression socks and hosiery if you have:
- Heavy, hot or tired legs
- A feeling of tension, cramps, fatigue or stabbing in calves
- Swollen ankles
- First signs of small varicose veins
Also, you should use compression socks and hosiery if:
- Your daily work includes prolonged time on your feet or periods of sitting.
When you are lying flat on bed, only 10mmHg pressure is exerted on your ankle, however, the moment you are on your feet, with the force of gravity the pressure increases to 90mmHg. When you are walking, with the help of calf muscles pumping blood back to the heart, the pressure on ankle drops to 35mmHg, but as soon as you stop walking, it is back right up to 90mmHg!!
- You are a frequent traveler
Whenever your legs are restricted during a long journey, they’re going to have a hard time! If you stay seated and don’t move around, you may be at increased risk of developing Traveler’s Thrombosis, otherwise known as “Economy Class Syndrome” Symptoms can include:
